Which AR-15 variant is your favorite and why?

Looking at adding another AR-15 to the arsenal. I don't do match shooting, just fun plinking and preparation for the inevitable zombie invasion. Seriously though, there are a lot out there now. Colt, Bushmaster, Armalite, Smith & Wesson, and some other brands I haven't heard of. Then on top of all the selections of brand, they all have several variants to choose from! If someone can guide me to the differences, I'll be very happy.

It depends if you want a piston AR which cost more. The new Ruger or Sig is very good. A regular gas AR can be had for 800.00 or less. RockRiver,Bushmaster,Stag,DoubleStar,LMT,DPMS and others are fine. There are so many makers of the AR. I have seen very good performance from above.

Your M4 Flat top is a goody.

If that is your budget, here are your best choices as I see them.

BCM

Noveske

Colt

LMT

LWRC

POF

Not in any particular order. Colt makes a very nice AR. They are considered the best production model, with all of the little features that aficionados consider mandatory for a long lasting, reliable AR.

All these little things are just that; little things. They add up, though, and are important if you are spending that kind of money.

Things like staking, barrel steel, finish, bolt steel, various tests, and things of that nature. It may all look the same on a cheaper model, and it may not make a big difference to a soda can either way, but if you want to pay for quality, make sure you are getting it.

BCM is Bravo Company's house brand for their parts, and their stuff is top notch. You can grab an upper and a lower from them and have a complete rifle, in almost any configuration you want, and it will be top shelf equipment. Assembly is as simple as pushing two pins, if you want, or you can assemble the stuff yourself.

Noveske uses good parts, and the rifles are in high demand. Very good stuff.

LMT makes a great quality, reliable firearm, and I'd place them alongside Colt, on most things.

POF and LWRC are top quality, but like Knight's, they aren't always the same as other options. They are innovators at times, and well worth it of you are interested in that. Personally, I'd rather have complete compatibility with other parts.

Off the shelf, go with that Colt or LMT. Get a base model, so you aren't removing expensive accessories when your mood changes. Grab the flat top upper, so you can fit other accessories down the line. You can get a rail-attachable carry handle, if you like the looks of it.

BCM is the new darling of the AR world, though. Their stuff is wonderful in that price range. And, with their new hammer-forged barrels.... Well... You just can't go wrong.

RRA, Stag, DPMS and things of that nature are decent rifles, but they aren't in the same class with the others. Bushmaster, Olympic, Armalite, and the lot are fine for plinking, and will save you a bunch of money, but they again aren't in the same category.

For 1700 bucks, you can have really, really good stuff.

My personal opinion, and that is precisely what it is, a personal opinion, is that if you want a plain jane rifle, go with the Colt. If you want something for your zombie invasion, go straight to Brasvo Company and start picking out cool uppers and lowers.

If you just want to have fun plinking, though, it doesn't really matter what you buy.

You can have fun without spending much money, but with your budget, you may as well get something nice. Colt or BCM would be my vote.

A friend of mine has a smith and wesson. I've shot it. Its an AR-15............. He may have had 150 rounds through it and the bolt went funky. the finish on the bolt got all rough and gritty feeling. It created alot of drag and didn't glide in the carrier like it should. I, on the other hand, have a Palmetto lower w/ a complete colt upper. It was manufactured in 1982 and it runs like a well oiled machine. well, it is a well oiled machine. Anyway, There a lot of good brands out there and I think with enough input you'll find a good one.

Most AR15 rifles are not able to be altered to shoot a larger cartridge just buy an upper change.... As an example - to go up to a .308 requires a whole different rifle like an AR10 because the receivers bigger to hold a larger cartridge....

DPMS offers several AR15 rifles with somewhat larger calibers than the standard .223....

http://www.dpmsinc.com/

Anyways --- Don't get hung up on a brand name --- Stick with Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, Stag Arms, DPMS or other well known brand....

Ar15 rifles can be purchased for by people with simple tastes or to folks that take accessories to absolute absurdity.......

I like AR15 rifles that are simple with no nonsense add ons.....

I think rails, laser pointers, over priced optics, christmas ornaments, bayonets and the kitchen sink put on many of these rifles but the video game crossover crown is pointless and makes no sense....

Get a standard model and learn how to use it with open iron sights....

$1700.. ???.... get a basic model for about $1000...... Spend whats left on a top quality case, cleaning kit and DVD training manual for maintenance.... Purchase bulk brass ammo and practice a lot....

Just a basic model like this.....

Just like mentioned above in most cases you're are just paying for brand names. A lot of your AR15s are manufactured by only a handful of machine shops. These parts are then sold to a brand company for assembling. Now with that said, there are still some questionable manufactures/brands that I would avoid like Vulcan or Blackthorwn products. It's best to sick with companies known for quality. I would also avoid ordering from Model 1 Sales.

Colt

DPMS

Bushmaster

LMC

CMMG

Stag

RRA

S&W

As for models, I'm a sucker for the basic M4A3. Just about all of the above mentioned companies produce a version of this style.

Go to ar15.com or m4carbine.com (has very knowledgeable industry professionals) and do some research about what manufactures are better than others.

I personally think the best value out there is Bravo Company Machine (BCM), I have one and it is a great duty rifle. These rifles are as good or better than Lewis Machine & Tool (LMT).

I also have a Rock River and it is very accurate, but if I was going into battle I would want a BCM,LMT or Colt.

Here is a few links to help you out:

Comparison Chart (BCM is not on it, but it is between COLT and LMT on standard equipment)

I am a personal fan of the Smith & wesson M&P15T...it has a free floating barrel and i have yet to have a jam...i shot it for a year completly dry...no jams...now i have lubed it with diffrnet brands and still no jams. Plus it has a sexy tactical rail for any attachment you might want from a 37mm launcher to a self made chainsaw attachment (for the Zombies).

Armalite. It is the most authentic AR-15, since it is the company that INVENTED the AR-15. This is the 100% authentic, true blue, military issue M16A2 rifle

Mostly you'll be paying for the "brand name" and what and how they are built.

Range price from $600 - $$$$

There are lots to choose from. So, really you want to look at what you have budgeted and what you wan t to use it for. Start there and look around.

Sorry can't be more of help - you have to be more specific as there are lots and lots out there.

Smith and wesson is by far the highest quality i have handled but I own a DP MS (panther arms) and I love it. Its cheap (compared to rock river and others) and is very accurate with my match grade setup and titanium bolt and carrier. mine is in the rifle configuration with an a2 stock and 20" DCM upper. its just a great gun.
