I don't want a Ruger because there rifles are not as accurate as the Marlin,Savage or Winchester.I don't want a gun that can rapid shoot or be made with a custom look.I just want an accurate rifle ( Ruger rifles accuracy are not so great)

How did you determine accuracy I have a dozen or more 22lrs. And a half dozen 22mags. I have yet to determine to a point which is most accurate. My criteria is to shoot 1 inch groups at 50 yards and all my rifles will do that with the proper ammunition. I can with Super-x put 3 or 4 out of 5 in the same hole, and sometime all 5 their target load precision. They have a different poi so the rifle must be sighed for them alone. You don't mention ammunition and that is so important. So my experience with my Savage 23aa,Marlin 69dl and Savage Anchutz, Marlin 920 in 22 mag and even the mossberg plinkster isn't too bad {I Don't like}my many 10/22's in all different types, rifles and carbines are the reason for my recommendation. And the reason so many others recommend.

because ruger's are popular and you probably didn't specific that you didn't want a rapid fire-capable rifle. There's nothing really wrong with rapid fire except you learn poor fire-control. if you have a ruger 10/22, remove the barrel band and allow the barrel to free-float. then it'll get really accurate. My Ruger 10/22 I added a Archangel stock, so its all Evil black rifle styled and cool looking. But it is a accurate rifle, despite not having a target barrel and shooting whatever crappy ammo from walmart I have. Perhaps not as good as my Marlin 925r or the Voere 66(?), but it comes very close. I find it will shoot the higher pwoer .22lr rounds easier than my Marlin or Voere can, the flatter trajectory and higher velocity gives superb accuracy at 100+ yards. I set out 20 orange shotgun clays (approx 4 inches across) and my ruger can on average put 3 shots into the center of the clay before a round hits the rim and the clay shatters. The Marlin does poorly with ammo like CCI Stinger, preferring lower powered high velocity or standard velocity ammo, I have to adjust for bullet drop more but I can put all 10 rounds into the center of a shotgun clay without hitting the rim.

The Voere I have is some old German made rifle, pre-1970s, front hooded post/rear ramp sight only. its very accurate and more if I decide to add a scope.

The ruger is very customizable, you can take any base model and add a target stock, or but a huge scope on it with weaver-pattern rails, high capacity magazines so you don't have to change mags very couple shots. Bull barrel if you want target tack-driver kind of accuracy. tactical stock to make it as tactical rifle, and etc. all those accessories make the ruger more easy to personalize.

My favorite mid priced rifles are savage. Savage made an outstanding bolt action rifle. They cost a little more than a ruger. I use it to practice basic rifle skills, and with a stand I can consistently shoot matches in half at the 25m mark.

I have a 3x fixed power scope and I think it is a great all around plinking and practice rifle.

I do not know if savage still makes the bolt action .22 anymore. I found it at a gun show.

Hello there,

My favorite rifles are Winchesters. However, I disagree with you about the accuracy of the Ruger. Admittedly I am not a 10/22 fan, but they are the most customizable 22 semi on the market. With some of the barrel upgrades, I cannot imagine a more accurate 22 in that price range. I may not care for them, but they are great rifles and very accurate.

Q. Why is it that when I ask for an outstanding 22lr for accurate poeple suggest a Ruger?

A. Because the Ruger fanboys don't know about any other .22LRs. I could write a longer explanation but that's basically what it comes down to.

Q. I just want an accurate rifle

A. Then take a look at a bolt-action .22LR like the Savage Mk 2 (maybe a BRJ/BTV), Kimber 82C, Sako Finfire/Quad, or Winchester 52.

Seriously guy, most people can't afford to drop 800.00 on a Anschutz Model 1416D. If you can drop that on NIB 22lr rifle that is fine but the rest of the people here generally pick up either a Marlin 60 or a 10/22 ruger. Why, because their cheap and work great for us common people!.

People on here do seem to like their Rugers...I have no idea why. They're not such a bad rifle, but when someone asks for an accurate rifle, the word Ruger isn't the first to pop into my head. Rugers do work nicely for general hunting but you can do better. If you're looking for a really nice .22lr, look into the Anschutz 1710 or 1712 series or the CZ 455.

Forgive them.... The Ruger 10/22 is so outstandingly popular that many folks overlook the fact it really isn't that accurate....

I should point out that if you really want excellent accuracy a semi-auto is not the best choice.... A bolt action rifle is best for that purpose.... Also many people that recommend accurate .22 bolt action rifles overlook the Ruger 77/22 bolt action.... That is an accurate .22 rifle.... It easily compares to the best Savage and other brand bolt action rifles....

Have a look.......

Also consider CZ rifles.....

They are introducing a very nice semi-auto .22 soon..... Its a model 513....

And of course there bolt action .22 rifles are very nice....

Most people recommend Ruger because it is a name they hear thrown around a lot or because that is the gun they own

Personally out of the dozens I have owned they are not very high on my list most accurate 22s

CZs are the ranking guns in the accuracy dept

people suggest ruger because they actually don't know anything about rifles and accuracy. lower end for accurate 22lr savage btvs markll. step up to performance off the shelf an Anschutz. accuracy also depends on ammo used if you use cheap ammo like american eagle, remington thunderbolt etc accuracy will suffer as well as jammed cases. CCI has proven to be one of the most accurate dependable bullets on the market.

People are probably suggesting the Ruger 10/22. Its extremely accurate and extremely inexpensive. Its been around for like 30 years. In fact, there are many many ways to make it look custom. Take a look at all the stuff you can do with it...

Then why don't you just buy Marlin, Savage or Winchester? Why do you need the validation and approval of a bunch of strangers?
2010-01-16 23:02:58 UTC
Ruger's aren't accurate? Riiiiight.

Marlin model 60. Buy one. Buy it now.

Savage MK II. Buy one. But it now.
2010-01-16 23:02:33 UTC
Then get one. For the most part accuracy is in the hands of the shooter anyway.

my favorite would have to be when people ask for a bolt action or pump action and people just say the 10/22
2010-01-16 23:52:40 UTC
if your so smart why ask ? i have a ruger 10/22 and can match it to any 22.just went shooting this weekend and can group mine at 100 yards to one inch .and mine is 30 years old

Why waste your time and our time to ask a question that you think you already know the answer to even though everyone else knows the correct answer?

Then buy a Savage.

Because Ruger is cool. It can be turned into a very accurate shooter but for the money it makes no sense.

Only a 10/22 can do this
