The Hungarian AMD-65 is a killer AK variant. I have one too. If I were you I would buy a Bulgarian or Polish AK-74 variant in 5.45x39mm. Right now J&G has them for $350 and $400 each. I may buy a Czech VZ-58 first though as they have dropped seriously in price - $350. All of them are next on my list. Just have to decide which one to buy first. I am going to try to purchase one at a time over the next six months.

Here is my complete list of AK variants that I already own:

Chinese NHM-91 (RPK variant in 7.62x39)

Romanian SAR-1 (AK-47 variant in 7.62x39)

Romanian SAR-3 (AK-74 variant in .223)

Hungarian AMD-65 (AK variant in 7.62x39)

I agree that you need a Makarov and TT33 Tokarev too. You can get a Bulgarian Makarov or a Yugoslavian TT33 for around $200-$250 right now from J&G.

I have two of them each also.

If you are going to spend $800 - $1000 you could by a mid priced AR-15 type rifle or even better, an FAL/L1A1 or Cetme/H&K G1 in .308 cal.

Seems like you're gravitating toward the "Soviet designed weapons" theme. Not a bad theme to start out with, since most of the weapons on there are affordable and plentiful.

Get a Makarov pistol next. That was the service sidearm of the Warsaw Pact (and all other Commie nations) for pretty much most of the Cold War. The Tokarev (I'm guessing your "norinco pistol" is a copy of the TT-33) was the USSR's pistol during WW2, but they phased them out in favor of the Makarov after the war. Makarovs, like most other Soviet-designed weapons, are robust, reliable, simple to operate, maintain and break down, and reasonably accurate.

You can also get a Mosin-Nagant carbine - either the M38 (no bayonet) or the M44 (side-folding bayonet) Those are affordable and fun to shoot as well.

The PSL is a Dragunov wannabe - it's not actually a Dragunov, but it does look pretty cool and it is an actual DM (designated marksman) rifle. It's not as accurate as a true Dragunov, but for about a 5th of the price of a real one, what would you expect? Operationally, the PSL is just a up-calibered AKM, chambered in 7.62x54 instead of the usual 7.62x39.

Good luck.

that isn't a 'milsurp' collection

that is a 'cheap stuff at the gun show' collection

in that case a tec 9 or a high point carbine would fit it just fine.

if you really wanted to have a milsurp collection you'd pick up an enfield rifle, mauser rifle, and/or maybe a K31 swiss ...or a makarov handgun or tokerev or browning hi power etc etc.
