While the turkey you cook for Thanksgiving has never been airborne, wild turkeys can fly. Apparently not fast enough, however. Hunting by early Americans brought the wild turkey population to a low of just 30,000 birds back in the 1930s. Conservation efforts since then, including the release of pen-raised birds back to the wild, has restored the population to about 7 million today.

Wild turkeys feed on the ground, which may have something to do with the myth that they can't fly. The have to fly, however, because they roost in trees at night. Some accounts say they can soar up to 55 mph for short bursts.

Oh, and the Thanksgiving turkey: It is so grossly fattened up in the farm that it has about as much chance of flying as you do after your pumpkin pie.

Yes, They can fly. Pretty well too. Not as good as a eagle or hawk. But they can fly whenever they need to. I have seen them fly for over a mile. The reason most people don't know they can is because they have never seen a turkey fly. The Wild Turkey prefers to walk. But they can fly very well when they need to.

Having worked on Mitchels Turkey farm in Ca no domestic birds can not fly.

But if you think a wild turkey can not fly you have never seen on in person. They can not fly like a duck from Canada to South america. but they can fly for short distiances. It sounds like a huey taking off whey they get going.

The domesticated turkey, the farm raised ones we all like to eat are too heavy to fly. The wild, smaller turkey, is able to fly. Not nearly as gracefully as the Hawk or Eagle, but enough to get into the trees where it roosts for the night.

Yes! My friend and her husband are a big rig crew, last fall they were on the interstate in norhtern Florida when a turkey cleared the top of the radiator by inches and crashed through the windshield at the best part of 70mph relative speed. My friend was significantly injured in the face, chest and neck and spent several weeks in hospital before she could fly home.

Yeaa...turkeys fly, not well...but they fly.

I've turkey hunted, and have seen many out in the woods take off to get away, have seen them come down from a roost and swoop off the mountain sides for a long distance. They aren't graceful, and they aren't geese....but they get some height even if not that great.

HE** YES THEY DO! They might take a while to get up, but Wild Turkeys roost in the tops of tree's at night. They sure don't get up there with a ladder....and they fly down in the morning at sun up.......I'm amazed by the people that don't know this..Really.....

If they are wild, then yes. Wild turkeys are quite capable of flying for distances up to 50 yards or more. They seem to not prefer to fly due to the massive energy expenditure required due to their shape.

Yes, wild turkeys do fly. That's how they roost out of harms way from coyotes n other predators.

Best.

Yes they fly very well for something that size. I don't mean butterballs on a farm but wild turkeys. I have seen them cross large areas, lakes etc. when flushed.

Absolutely, and quite well. I have seen them cruising across an interstate well above tree-top level, and moving on out! I've flushed them in the woods and seen them climb out and over trees, and sail away, like quail and pheasant..

And Turkeys are like quail; they have large breast muscles used for fast, short-distance flying.

Yes. It will scare the crap out of you when they fly down at dusk. And to the goober that said penguins are the ONLY bird that cant fly, what are ostriches, rodents?
2007-11-15 13:30:31 UTC
yes turkeys fly. do you think they walk every where. and by the way penguins aren't the only birds that cant fly. ostriches and emu's cant either.

2007-11-15 11:15:48 UTC
Yes!!

I've gotten into a draw one time very early in the morning of deer season where there are about hundred were roosting in the trees.
2007-11-14 19:19:19 UTC
Yes, wild turkeys can.

And to all of those people who are saying no, remember, the PENGUIN is the ONLY bird that cannot fly.

You probably can't call it flying but they can get airborne for few dozen feet. But they may only get a few feet off the ground.
