How much .22lr is reasonably enough nowadays?

I saw a question about how much .22lr to keep on hand recently and it got me thinking. Around a decade ago people would say 5,000 if not 10,000 rounds is a good amount to have and work up from there. Of course that was when a brick of 550 was seven dollars after sales tax. So you could spend $150 and get 10,000 rounds. Of course those days are gone forever so in this day and age how much is reasonably enough?

Most of us are already going to have several thousand rounds because we bought cheap and stacked deep. Personally 2500 to 3000 rounds would be A good amount to put away and maybe another brick or three to just Have to grab and go when you want to go out.

What you consider a reasonable amount is 100% different than what others do. I may need 2500 rounds a month to keep everyone in my family happy and shooting regular. You might need 250 a month. Dingbat down the road might need 250 a year.

Every time I go target shooting with my .22s I will blow thru well over a 1000 rounds in just a few hours. A brick of 22 ammo is 500 rounds so having on hand a case of bricks for me is "enough".

Honestly - you don't give enough info for us to help you.



Me - I used to shoot on a weekly 22 pistol team, Senior Games, and State Championships. I had 3 teenage boys all with Ruger 10/22's - the wife owned hers, and I had 4 or 5 of them myself. We live in Alaska - I have a place to shoot almost within sight of my house. Small game hunting season runs Aug 10 to Feb 28th or so. Obviously - a few hours visit to the range with the boys and their 25rd mags is going to be more than some folks shoot in a year.



Next - most all my 22's are suppressed. Not just any 22 will do when using a suppressor if you want to be totally silent. Needs to be subsonic. So - I have a separate stash of subsonic ammo.



Next - not all ammo is good for hunting. We like using the high velocity rounds for grouse and the CCI Stingers for fox and coyote in the winter.



Match ammo - is not a big deal. Most all expensive match ammo is subsonic, and, most match shooters understand that firing subsonic ammo is like firing cheap match ammo.



The problem we faced..... is the subsonic ammo. People who don't know what that stuff is - just understand it is 22 LR - buy it all the time - then complain it's not very powerful or jams in their guns.



Next issue - the guys who already had 50,000 rounds stashed, still kept buying 22 ammo when ever it showed up. This went on for years and years. Our local stores finally figure out to break the chain of these guys constantly buying the store out minutes after the shelves were stocked on Monday's was to only sell $22 a box of 50 high end match ammo. Joe Blow has no interest in buying that - he cant flip it - but at least people who want to take their kid shooting or hunting can get ammo. It's not until the past few months normal 22 has lasted on store shelves until Saturday. Last Saturday - was the first time since 2009 I was able to buy subsonic 22 ammo - and even then it was limited to 3 of the 50rd boxes.



In 2009 I got laid off. Same time as the big ammo shortage. I had about 56k rounds of 22 stored in 20mm ammo cans. 5K subsonic match, 3K 60gr Aguila subsonic (for M16/AR-15 conversion rifles), 5K Aguila subsonic, 14k Remington Subsonics, 500 rds CCI Stingers, and the rest was WalMart $6.99 per brick on sale cheapo Winchester/Federal/Remington. I spent the summer of 2009 shooting 6 to 10 times a week and having a ball!! LOL. I received both retirement benefits + unemployment. Got a new job, but the market died again in 2011.... so another 8-9 months shooting 3-8 times a week and having a great time. Its now been 7 years....... what is left of my stash? I am very proud that I never put a dent in that stash of high grade match ammo....... because I just don't see it ever showing up again in stores - and when and if it does - it aint gonna be near what little I paid for it back in 2005 to 2009. I also didn't put a dent in my nice Aguila 60gr. The cheap Remington Subsonics are 80% gone. So is 70% of the really cheapo WalMart stuff.



What did I learn? Its the cheapo 22 and the very high end hunting CCI Stingers I miss. 500 Stingers, to keep 4 hunters happy in winter was not enough...... we don't fire them allot when in the field but I had mis judged how many we used sighting in at season beginning and through the hunting season. And yes, I knew we were going through cheapo 22 like water - but - I had no idea it was a fire hose with the boys....... lol. Between their 10/22's and the suppressed pistols - we had some good times.



That said..... we only dented the 22 stash. We never touched the stash of center fire pistol and rifle.

How much ammo do you reasonably NEED? If you plan to shoot 100 rounds a week, then it doesn't hurt to buy bulk, but if you just want to stockpile ammo for the zombie apocalypse, then you're probably wasting your money.

everyone has their own need..40 yrs ago my uncle died and left me several thousand 22s. I still have a few coffee cans full lol...they work fine

If you're about to be marked, pray the Jesus prayer. Hide with Orthodox Christians to escape 666; leave all electronics behind so that antichrist's minions can't track you. Give to charity in the name of Archangel Michael; he rescues people from temporary hell twice a year (or brings them up a level, that is, to a level with less punishment; eventually, people are freed).
