The knife you carry around in your Brooks Brothers suit while you're working at the home offices of JP Morgan Chase will be different than the knife you carry around while you're putting up a barbed wire fence on a 5,000 acre ranch in Wyoming.
Care to give us more to go by? Otherwise you're just going to get a bunch of random answers that may or may not actually give you what you want.

I'm really partial to Kershaw. they make really good knives for not a lot of money. I carry around a Kershaw Shuffle everyday. it's very thin and lightweight and the blade steel (3cr13MOV) is sharp and holds an edge well. also, there's no question that blade length is legal in every state that allows people to carry knives. some state laws it's 3", others it's 4", it varies, but usually 3 or 4. other times i carry a Kershaw Brawler if i want a spring assisted knife. I also have a Kershaw Select-fire if i ever need a multi-tool

When at home I carry a small Swiss Army pocket knife all of the time. About a 2 inch blade. Out in the woods I carry a Western 6 1/2 inch fixed blade in a sheath. Both of these knifes will hold an edge that you can shave with, with proper care.

If there were a "best knife" to carry around then we would all be carrying around the same knife, now wouldn't we?

Small size one, sharp and portable.
If you want more purpose, there are many multifunctional knife tool selling in the market.
Some comes with little file, saw, scissors and so on.
Really practical.

I've currently got a Swiss Army Hunter in my pocket. Works for me, others may not be impressed. Opinions are like *ssholes, everyone has one.

for hunting i carry a greber gator with gut hook. for everyday carry, i carry a kobalt razor knife. if i'm going to be in a knife fight i will take my hen and rooster bowie knife but most likely i will cheat and take my pistol (s&w 44mag)
Your question was really weak, can you repost your question with more detail, ect; lock back, fixed blade, survivor, skinning?
Sorry but we really can't help you without more input, are you a hunter, fisherman, cook or do you just plan to whittle on a stick? This matters thanks.
