Question:
Got delayed by FBI when purchasing a firearm?
2015-03-15 07:49:20 UTC
So I was out with my boys and we were going to get their first guns that they saved up for,we were getting two 22. Rifles (not like I'm buying an AR) so anyways we picked them out and my kids were literally jumping with joy as we headed to the check out and then boom, I got delayed for my 1st sons gun(it was a Henry lever action) so now they are eagerly waiting for the delay to end but my question would be is this going to happen to me when I buy my seccond sons rifle?

Just a heads up so that none of you are asking
-my record is clean(I mean besides that time I wore mix matched socks to school)
-my boys have both taken Hunter safety and passed
-we bought the guns separately because they wanted to give them their money one at a time and not in one big receipt.
- I was in the military with an honorable discharge

Sometimes you just get delayed, without any rhyme or reason to it at all. I've been purchasing firearms since I was 18 (which was many years ago) in seven different States, and I STILL get delayed from time to time. Other times, I just get an approval. It doesn't matter where I go, although I've gotten delays from two different dealers on consecutive days, and then a week later I went back to the same dealers and got approved both times.

Like I said, no rhyme or reason to it that I know of, and I used to be on the other side of the counter actually calling the FBI...and I STILL don't know. I've known cops and even Feds to get delays, even an actual FFL Licensee...

I don't pretend to understand it, but don't worry about it. It literally can happen to anyone.

"Rifles (not like I'm buying an AR) "

Why do you think that should matter at all what you buy?

You probably got delayed because:

1. You have a similar name to a convict.

2. Your height/weight doesn't exactly match what you put down when you registered your driver's license

3. The FBI was overwhelmed by requests, wanted to get donuts, literally no rational or good reason other than someone wanting to be a pain in the ***.

And yes, you will probably get delayed. I have a CCW permit, am considered a 'trusted person' by the government, never had any legal violations other than some speeding tickets, but I get delayed EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to buy a firearm, and it has been that way for almost a decade and across a dozen guns.

" Rifles but now apparently everyone is a killer so gun laws are getting worse and worse and yes I know it's for our safety but it's a pain for us. Thanks though!"

Gun laws have nothing to do with safety. Gun laws have everything to do with fearmongering and people being afraid of something they are ignorant of.

Something just happened to cause the delay. I was delayed ONCE. By the time I got home the dealer called and said that it had been approved, but I was headed out of town and went back a couple of days later to buy the gun.

It happens every day.

I got a delay on 4 of the last 6 guns I bought. The last 2- a Henry 22, and a Kahr 380 went through in 5 minutes.

The kind of rifle you were buying has no relevance as far as whether a delay flag will pop up on the NICS check. When filling out form 4473 and then calling into NICS (or going online to E-NICS), they merely ask what kind of gun (rifle, handgun, revolver, shotgun, other). I've only ever had one Delay come up when running a NICS check. When I was forwarded to another department, it turns out that the person's name was close to someone on the red flag list. Was nothing more than a further review. The Delay turned into a Proceed and all was good in the world.

Many people get delayed and from my personal observation the frequency and likelihood has increase over the last few years. Lets be frank here - there is no incentive for the government to make things easier for us law-abiding citizens who want to own guns and it's not as if anyone in Congress or the news media is holding the bureaucrats' feet to the fire to make things better for us "evil" gun owners.

None of the information you included - is of any help or concern. What you SHOULD have told us - is if you included your SSN on the form. Yes - it is optional.....but unless your name has two 'X' and five 'Z''s there is probably someone in jail with it - and the only way the FBI can tell between you and them is the SSN. If you had mentioned this one fact - it would have totally revolutionized the answer here.

The other things you should have told us - when was the last time you bought a gun? What state?

That - and lots and lots of inexperienced sales staff have ben told not to sell guns to people if it appears they are not buying it for themselves. Even though it is perfectly legal for you to buy guns for your son, daughter, mom, dad, sister or brother as gifts....... lots of sales staff don't have little bit of knowledge added.

Last - I need to take you out behind the wood shed for your attitude. Your 'not like I am buying an AR' statement makes you more of a problem to gun owners than gun grabbers. At least gun grabbers - we know where they stand. But you - do you seriously think anti-gun people are only after AR's?? WTF dude? News Flash - the machine guns, silencers, SBR's etc got severely banned in 1936 - no change in crime. The gun control bills or 1968, 1986, and the AWB - no change. The gun grabbers - the city dwelling, never held a gun folks who are anti gun ..... when all the AR's are gone, they will go for the bolt guns - and when those are gone they are gonna go for guns just like you are getting for your kids. Me - I hate people like you - just fricken hate you........ you sit on the sidelines of the gun debate thinking some how your guns are going to be ignored while the rest of us are putting up a fight. What the heck? So far as the gun grabbers are concerned - all guns are bad guns. Unless you have spent the past 3-4 years stationed at McMurdo in the Antarctic you could not have missed learning this living in the USA as a gun owner. With all due respect - pull your head out of the sand.

Aside from the other reasons, they probably received 47,202 other requests for background checks that day, and they don't get paid any more to hurry.
