Hello, I'm looking for a new gun but i can't choose. I'm thirteen and I'm one of the best shots I know(not joking) and I probably won't go much past $500, or I would go with Remington Model 700 . But any way, I'm debating on:1) M19-30. 2) Marlin X7 30-06 OR .270, or anything around $500 with .243 or bigger. I love shooting more than anything. I may buy a shot gun if the price is right, already got an old Steven's Double Barrel 12 Gauge. Guns that I could shoot/ already have in case your wondering: Steven's Double barrel, Remington 1100, .22 Hornet, Savage model 250-3000, Traditions INC. Black Powder, S&W 9mm and S&W .22, 44 magnum, 44 muzzle loader, plus MANY OTHERS just incase you wanted to know my one pap has like 30 + guns. anyway if you got any suggestions please put them below please no spam.

Best wishes for a lifetime of shooting, Nick. I began when I was 13, joined a rifle team and shot competitively for 7 years. Great fun and great foundation for a lifetime of hunting and shooting. Regardless of what gun(s) you get, if you or your father haven't been invovled in hand loading, definitely do so. No matter what rifle you get, hand loading will provide you with hours of fun, lots of experience and increase the versatility of your gun tremendously. Much will depend on what kind of shooting that is available to you. If you plan on hunting big game (deer-sized and upward) then the .243 is great. One thing to remember is that as you get older and your employment allows, you will be buying more guns. So you don't have to look right now for that Alaska grizzly rifle. Your 250-3000 is an excellent rifle for deer and the cartridge can be reloaded. Is it the Savage 99 or a bolt. If bolt, that's best for accuracy. Get a good scope. And practice. As an all-around caliber with plenty of potential I like the 7mm mags. The caliber is excellent for most big game around the world. When your body gets more mass think about the .375 H & H mag. This cartridge can successfully put down virtually any animal on any continent (except something like elephant or cape buffalo in Africa). With the .375 and 7mm and a .243 you would have just about everything covered. Of course what happens, when you become involved in guns and shooting, you're never satisfied with just a few guns and you wind up, like your father, with 30+. Take your time, do a lot of reading, definitely do your own loading and enjoy. I'm 74, have hunted all over the world and have many happy memories of days spent in the field with my rifle(s).

I recently picked up a marlin XL7 in 30-06 and it is a solid rifle especially for the money mine was $300. Another rifle I would look at would be the Weatherby Vanguard, I held one and worked the action and it feels very solid they are priced around $420. As for calibers I would recommend anywhere from a .308 to a 30-06. I think you can handle those cartridges without a problem. The 30-06 just feels like someone has given you a light shove. I wouldn't, and didn't get the Savage Axis.

\\\\\\\\\\\\.308 all the way.... Got the range, knock down power & it dead on as long as you set your scope. Im talking about 800 yards out & beyond. Trust me, I read military magazine's and books all the time. Snipers are still using .308's in the middle east, yes they use .50 cals to but i read in a special weapons and tactics magazine and special forces chose to use the .308 because it is alot lighter and its good for CQB which means close quarter battle as well as a sniper rifle. Put it this way and if yall dont believe me look it up online because I know its online somewhere because I read in a military magazine and getting shot with a .308 at 1000 yards is like getting shot point blank range with a .357 magnum. That should tell you something right there. I hunt with a .308 not like a browning or normal hunting rifle but an AR10. A cilvilian version of what special forces are using in afganastan and iraq...do some research online if u dont believe me. A .308 is the perfect hunting rifle, and it doesnt kick at all trust me. I got a .243 when I was 12 and when I was 13 my dad got me a remington bolt action .308 and i hunted with it until 3 yrs ago when i bought an AR10 .308 by DPMS Panther Firearms why I got it is because its an assault rifle and DPMS has a contract with the us goverment so that means our troops mostly special forces use them. Also blackwater inc uses DPMS hell I dont have to tell you look online yourself lol....there are plenty of websites that will prove to you what im saying. i cant remember the website but there are more than one that will tell you all about DPMS...Listen any company our goverment and a police forces use that she tell you right there its a damn good weapon............Go with the .308 read up on that aswell as far as hunting rifles....Get a remington, browning..... just go with the .308 and u want regret it.....TRUST ME!!!!

I have two Remington 700s. One is a .308 Winchester and the other is a .300 Win Mag. .300 outperforms .308 in every category, but at the cost of higher price and higher recoil.

That's not to say the .308 stinks. .308 is a VERY capable round. I have friends in the Marine Corp who have to make 1,000 yard hits to qual as snipers.

Another one you might like is the .270.

I believe a Savage is a well rifle so they can suit your demands. I had a Savage one hundred ten in 30-06 and cherished it I am sorry I ever bought my Savage. I might no longer purchase the Remington 770 they're junk however the 700s are high-quality rifle.

If your gonna get the axis get the stevens 200. The same gun but with a better stock. It's not a great stock but it's better. You should also look into the savage 111/110 series with the accutrigger and accustock.
