Mexico has one of the world's toughest gun control laws. Citizens are only allowed to own a .22 lr rifle or a .38 caliber pistol or a shotgun in .410 or less. They can only own 1 firearm and have to pass extensive and expensive government licensing and registration checks and fees. Common people sometimes have to wait 1 year to be approved to buy a firearm, but they are mostly denied, there is a 1 in 6 approval ratio for a permit to own a firearm. There is no law that allows a citizen to defend his family or property in Mexico, if a homeowner defends his home with a firearm in Mexico, both he and the thug will go to jail under Mexican law.
If gun control works, why is Mexico under siege by cartels?
