I think a lot of people don't know crap about guns and since they hear about ak-47's they think it's an expensive rifle when you can get one for about 500 bucks....they think it's expensive because they hear about the gun in rap videos and all that

The AR is the way to go. It is more accurate, better handling, more upgradeable. Lube the AR and it won't jam easily.

People tend to overstate the reliability of the AK (it can fall out of planes and still fire...?) and I doubt that too many owners will ever subject an AR to environmental conditions that will cause it to jam, though they may be too damn lazy to clean their rifle.

Yes, the AR requires more care to run well, but you are rewarded with a better rifle.

---I'd also like to mention that if someone feeds an AR steel cased ammo, they should expect failures to extract due to lacquer and/or carbon blow by gumming up the chamber. The AR was designed to use brass cased ammo. Fire the steel cased ammo for plinking and other non-serious uses, and use a chamber brush after firing it.

A lot of people don't know crap about firearms, and this includes police and military types, who should. Those who do, have opinions about the weapons, but know that they work and that is what counts.

I'm not out to bad mouth rappers or gang members, so this isn't about that. Most gang members use simple and effective weapons, and the cheaper the better (since they are illegal in most cases and prone to "disappear" under various reasons). Thus, they favor guns like the AK-47, which you can get almost anywhere, has a good reputation for working, and has a very effective image, thanks to the media. Like you said, a legal version runs about $500 in the US, and illegal ones are even cheaper. I've seen AKs sell, fully automatic versions, for less than $300, and sometimes half that, where they are really common. The AK-74 is a little higher, or cheaper, depending on the image it has, and how ammo is. In the last ten years, they may have come down, but were fairly rare since they were still "hot" weapons before the break up. And, in most cases, the AK can be made Full auto with a little work, and this makes it even more attractive to some.

The AR -15 is about twice the price, harder to modify, and tends to project a police image, which makes it less attractive. Even if you have the cash, as most drug dealers do, why pay to give it to the cops when they make an arrest, and take the weapon? Drug dealers are not stupid, even if people think they are. The M16 can be much cheaper, is full auto, but still carries a lot of time and a "bad" image. It also has the "rep" for being a problem weapon, which came from the very first M16s that where shipped to Vietnam, back in 1966. A change in powder and lack of cleaning caused the problems, but it was bad enough to cause a dislike of the weapon even today. They usually do a lot better, especially the AR semi autos, but I hear the M4 is different, due to changes in the way it is done today. I have owned and fired a lot of ARs with very few problems, and only 1 M16 has messed up, very badly, but that was an issue that could have been prevented, I'm told, and was made worse by my firing it "left handed" instead of how it was made to be fired (right handed, which would not have cause an injury).

I recall Ice-T singing about banning the AK, which he had stashed with a "case of hand grenades" in one of his songs. Such themes, being realistic and popular, have helped the image along, as have the repeated use of violence by murders, in schools and work-places (such as Post Offices), where the media focus is on the weapon, as if it made the person do those things, not being a tool of a vengeful and unbalanced person who the system FAILED to catch or caught and let go because they were too busy with stupid things like persecuting those they dislike (Blacks and others).

For a poor person, $500 IS expensive. But, the Soviets built the AK cheaply, and worked to make it cheaper so they could produce millions of them. They are simple, well built weapons. Today, however, most people seem to be able to afford $500 for a weapon, even if they cannot afford baby food (another government issue) or need a home, and the social system doesn't care unless they can get something in "return" for their help.

I like the AK series for simplicity in manufacture. However, they are too short for me to really like to shoot. The newer M16 A2 addressed this, being a little longer, and was much more simple to work on, having only few parts to the fire control system. I haven't seen or fired the A3 and up, so I can't really comment. The AK-74 was more effective, lethally, than the A1, but the A2 + have addressed this and seem to be a little better. However, the .30 caliber AK-47 still have the best reputation for stopping, due to the larger wound it creates. I will pick an M16 in most cases, but feel fine with the AK too. But, at close range, give me a shotgun or a 7.62x51mm for longer ranges. In any event, anything is better than having nothing but a knife or your fists when the other guy(s) have a gun.

I think they're different guns. The 5.56/.223 is flatter shooting than the 7.62x39, and I like the stock iron sights, the mag release, the trigger, and the safety on the AR more. If you don't like to clean guns an AR-15 is probably not for you, but it's not impossible.

I like the AK too, out to about 100 yards or so in 'minutes of bad guy' - it's accurate enough. I have two notes about the AK, 1., there is no 'hold open' feature, and 2., the way I shoulder the gun the stock sometimes knocks off my ears. That being said I'm looking to add an AK because I stock that cartridge for my SKS.

Each has it merits.

The AK is inexpensive and works. Ugly, but, practical. Not something you would take into competition - but - it sure is reliable.

The AR is more refined, suitable for tactical and long range shooting depending on the configuration. The fact users can swap so many parts around and mission customize them - is why they are so popular. It is allowed in state, regional and national match shooting......... the AK is not allowed.

The only reason the AK is still around it the price. If the AK could be made as accurate and flexible as the AR - then the AR would be a gonner.

Bottom line. People who don't care what's happening more than 200 yards in front of them buy an AK. Shooters who care about hitting things at 200, 300 and 600 yards away buy and use AR's. What you use all depnend on your application.

Most really hate this question but I love it. I have been around both for the last 20yrs. I used the m-16 in the military and have owned an ak for the last 10yrs. I loved shooting the m16 but really hated cleaning it (lots of spots that need TLC for it to work). I bought an ak (after the military) and absolutely love it. Now, there will be some out there that will tell you it is a cheap, inaccurate gun and those who own them couldn't afford the ar15 - not true! Yes, the ak is cheap (around $400 - low end and as much at $700 higher end) but the gun will last forever. It is not inaccurate, mine will place 10/10 shots in the size of a fist at 100yds without a scope. Now some will say " yea that is not 300yds" - true but, my MOA at 300yds would be 6in (width) x 12 (height) which is easily possible. In fact the accuracy constraints of the ak come from its height deviation not its width deviations. So to me, the ak was made perfect - it is accurate enough to fulfill the role of assault weapon and can take alot of abuse. Think of it this way, yea the ar/m16 is accurate but what happens if it jams (and yes they still have jam issues not related to proper maintenance.)?

I agree, I like the AK over the AR.

I have 2 ARs and 3 AKs, all bought brand new and meticulously maintained. While both ARs choke on steel cases and stop cycling if you look at it wrong, the AK is the most reliable thing I've ever owned. It's simpler & much easier to maintain.

Don't get me wrong, I like my ARs a lot, but if I had to trust my life to one rifle in an unknown scenario...it would be the AK.

I have both. I have 4 AR's and 3 AK's. I enjoy shooting both, but this bit about comparing the two of them side by side just isn't right. They are both best in the class they were designed to be in. If your not gonna clean it and drag it through the mud, water, ice and snow and expect it to work you better have a AK.If you want to hit a very small target every time without fear the AR is the only way to go. AK's most of the time always go boom when you pull the trigger....period.Although you may have to pull the trigger alot more to hit what you want to. If you want to shoot longer ranges and hit a very small target every time the trigger is pulled the AR rules. Personally I don't mind cleaning and maintaining the AR and if well maintained it is very hard to beat.It is the fussier of the two but if kept clean I'd much perfer the AR.

Like more?... The AK47.... Does than mean I think its better or superior?... Not necessarily.... I happen to own both of these rifles... AR15, AKs, SKS's Mini 14 / 30's etc... Several as a matter of fact... Both have there weaknesses and strengths....

I like the Ak47 because its reliable and simple.... When I want to do some target shooting to longer distances - like 300 yards with a scoped AR15 firing at steel plates then of course the AR is a better gun.... But for more close range shooting I think the AK is a better gun.....

It all gets down to what you want it for.... Precision shooting?.. The AR15.... For close range metal targets with open iron sights I way more prefer the AK47 rifle....

I prefer the AR-15. It way more accurate, right out the box, whereas the AK-47 Is only accurate on the first shot, then it's "Pray and spray". Down here in Missouri, you have shorten your magazine to 10 rounds. Easy for the AR, hard for the AK.

I prefer my one shot one kill rifles. I'll take an AR-15 pattern rifle. 99% of the time they will out shoot an AK pattern by leaps and bounds. Yes they are more prone to failures if you don't keep them properly maintained. But a person who doesn't properly maintain a firearm is asking for issues. Even then, douse the action with CLP, run a brush through the bore then a few patches, and it will run just fine 99% of the time.

Yeah, if the AR was such an unreliable weapon then so many companies wouldn't make it, and most new firearms wouldn't be based on the same basic design.

This is my philosophy. I absolutely abhore the AR-15. Mostly because I'm not an accountant and don't drive a Lexus. Its just a mix up between a toy and a cheap .223 zip gun. Not at all reliable, it needs constant attention and cleaning. But I friggin LOVE the AK! Its made out of like oil rigs and goat carts, super reliable, and cheap as dirt. I had a AK 47 type 2/a milled reciever and it never gave me any problems, where as any given day at my gun range, there are AR15's breaking and jamming left and right. Infact, yesterday, someone's AR started to rip the ends off of cartridge casings and leave the rest in the chamber. I don't get where people think AK's are expensive, because they are cheap for the amount of fun and fire power you recieve.

EDIT

Heywood, I do believe i understand the AR-15 mechanism quite clearly. And I have the money to afford one as well. I just choose to have a gun that take the abuse that I most of the time dish out. Something as fragile as an AR-15 isn't well suited to slogging through the mud and rain in my experience. The innards of the AR-15 make it suseptible to sudden shock (dropping it), moisture (rain, humidity), and fine particulate (sand, dirt). In many cases, dropping an AR or AR style weapon system from a height of 2.4 feet will break the firing pin. You can drop an AK 47 with its stamped, not pulled, forged, or rolled parts from 20+ feet and just have to worry about reinserting the magazine. It was made by the most reliable war machine in the world, the USSR. The Soviets built every weapon system with reliability and ease of use in mind, not the ability to attach a laser or flashlight to make it feel like you're in a movie.

I own both. For, 'social engagements' inside 225 yards I prefer an AK.

I prefer to shoot my AR. Much more enjoyable. But if something went bad, I would grab the AK.

I think the basic answer.... especially after reading "Going Ballistic"'s comments should be... the AR -15 is a fine weapon for people at least somewhat familiar with fine weaponry and the basics of care for such pieces. The AK is made for morons who can barely manage to lock and load and are so impoverished that they don't even OWN any underwear to cut up for a cleaning patch.
