Reviews on the Remington 770, and which caliber?

Question

I am thinking about getting the Remington 770, or the 700. I am not sure which is better, and if there is much of a difference in performance at all?

I am thinking either the 30-06, or the .308. I am leaning towards the .308, for when I am practicing, or just shooting around I can get Wolf ammo for dirty cheap.

If you could please give me your reviews/experience with either, or where to find reviews I would really appreciate it!

You will not find a huge difference in performance (accuracy) between a basic 700 SPS and a 770. The 750 is stupid expensive new. I have owned several 7400 and earlier versions and I prefer a good 700 over them.

The problem with the 770 is the terribly cheap (plastic) stock and the feel of the bolt. The stock including the trigger guard and sling swivels is 1 piece. It is probably the worst feeling bolt of any current productrion rifle out there . I posses one and have put several boxes of ammo through it. It is plenty accurate and the basic scope which comes with it is functional. If you are set on an inexpensive rifle, check out the Marlin XL7. If you can afford it, go with a 700 SPS or a Weatherby Vanguard.

Do not count on Wolf ammo being available and cheap for very long. It is far from dirt cheap. Right now, .30-06 is still available from the CMP surplus for less than Wolf. The .30-06 is brass cased and easily reloadable unlike the steel cased Wolf.

Just get the tried-n-true Model 700. The biggest difference between the .30-06 and the .308 Winchester is that the first is a long action and the second is a short action. Which do you prefer? The '06 has a little more 'umph' and is available in more diverse factory bullet weights. The .308 may (or not) have a slight edge at long range (say 600 or so yards). Either caliber is suited for hunting any North American Big Game although I would go with a .338 Winchester Magnum for the big bears. Between the '06 and .308 the .308 ammo is going to be cheaper and easier to find nowadays since it is so popular.



The .30-06 Springfield is the benchmark American big game caliber. What the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum is to African the .30-06 Springfield is North America, the best all-around hunting rifle. The .308 isn't far behind.

Bought the Remington 770 from Walmart in 2007 because I heard how accurate a270 shoots . Well its been the worst gun I ever bought. 1st thing that happened is the bolt locked up on me could not get it to unlock so I could discharge a spent round second this year 2014 I loaded the clip and pushed the bolt forward to load a round hand no where near the trigger and gun pointed in the air and the minute I closed the Bolt the gun went off by itself scared the H out of me I have been hunting for at least 25 years and will go back to savage much better gun don't buy that gun run from it.

I love my 700's, and .308 will kick less and is probably the most accurate round ever made (It's what the military uses for sniper rifles after all), and it's a short action, so you will get a lighter, more compact rifle, plus it has plenty of power for anything up to and including sheep. If you are considering hunting bear or elk, I would go with the 30-06 though.

I persanolly think 30-06....this is good for medium sized game.. Deer..coyote ETC... the .308 is gonna be good for medium sized game..But is better for bigger game.. bear..montain goat.. Sheep.
