I'm looking for a little feedback on the Mossberg ATR. Is it a good rifle for the money? If you have one would you recommend one? Is a fuctional rifle that will last?

My friend's wife bought him one 2 years ago for Christmas and asked me to mount the scope and sight it in so she could give it to him ready to hunt. I have 3 Mossberg shotguns and an old .22 but it was the first center-fire Mossberg I'd ever shot. I took it to the range and shot 2 rounds at 50 yards. I looked through my spotting scope and saw 1 figure 8 hole. At 100 yards it shot a 3 shot group under an inch. I was so impressed I bought my brother one for his birthday. We took it to the range and after we had it dialed in he took 2 shots and I took 2 more. All 4 were under 3/4" at 100 yards. They are both .270s. Not as pretty as some of the rifles in his gun safe but it shoots great. Neither one has had any problems with feed or extraction. I've had my shotguns since the early 80s and never had a problem with them either so if you want a good, reliable, inexpensive rifle that shoot great, I'd say buy one. Remember to wear ear and eye protection and good luck and good shooting.

The ATR series is a good rifle, although a bit heavy to drag around all day. New, the .30-06 and .270 go for right about $300, i cant imagine the .308 is much different. I never had an issue with the .270, and it was as accurate as i needed. I think your ruger (assuming its in nice shape) is likely a better overall quality, so i wouldnt trade if it were me. That said, the mossberg had a decently smooth bolt and nice trigger, considering the price.

The Mossberg 100-ATR is an economy rifle.... Not bad for the price but surely not as accurate as a Remington 700 or a Savage Model 12.... 2 Of my friends have these 100-ATR rifles. One chambered in .308 and the other in .30-06..... My buddys let me shoot both of there Mossberg rifles.. Both were decently accurate.... I mainly target shoot and used both of them for that reason... Here is my observations.... I shoot steel plates targets to 300 yards. 8, 12, 15 inch steel gongs... I had absolutely no problems hitting them to the 300 yards point. NO I do not shoot paper targets so have no opinion if they are sub MOA target competition rifles. I assume they aren't that accurate. These rifles are plenty accurate for deer, wild hogs and coyote.... On the other hand if you want 1 1/2 inch groups at 200 yards they may disappoint....
The price is decent and if you will be hunting medium to larger animals like white tail deer they surely wont disappoint. The price isn't bad at all either.....
Recommend? -- If your on a budget then yes.... If you can come up with a little more money try to get a Remington 700 or the Savage..... If cash is tight surely buy one....IF you only deer hunt then any one chambered in .270, 30-06 or .308 will get the job done....
If you only plan on target shooting then stick with the .308 only.... .308 Ammo in bulk can be had cheap - .270 and 30-06 is more expensive....
They are an absolute bargain for what they can do. They have a very good button barrel, I hear the metal coating is pretty good (can't really call it bluing), something like armor-coat or what-ever that protects well. The composite stocks do the job. I would pass on getting the gun/scope package because you deserve better scopes. They limit the selection of cartridges to keep the pricing down, but all the offerings are solid shooters.
Only thing that would better the ATR would be when you can find the Howa 1500/Weatherby Vangard for the same or close pricing.
I have seen the Vangards at even Wal Mart with amazing prices.
