Can a civilian own an SV-98 rifle in the US?

I have been attracted to the Izhmash SV-98 for a long time, and yes I did discover it while playing Battlefield Bad Company 1. Anyways I am 17 and I will be applying for a gun license when I'm 18, and I am interested in bolt action. So, can I own an SV-98? Or, Izhmash's official civilian version, the Record 38 or something like that, in the US? Also, things I want to know:

-How much will it cost?
-What calibres?

Okay, and I know people suggest the R700, but I'm not really into it. I shot it before and, meh, it was okay. I want something different.
Also, I heard about McMillans, are there any nice rifles they have? Thanks

License? To own a bolt action rifle?

When you're 18 and have the money as long as you aren't a criminal just go to whatever store has those kinds of things and buy it. Or buy it online and have it sent to an FFL near you.

That simple.

I think you grandiosely misunderstand gun laws in the United States. We are free people with a right to own firearms. It is not a privilege granted by the government that one needs a license for. Unless, of course, you live in one of the places that has decided to suspend the Bill of Rights, in which case: soap, ballot, jury, and ammo. Use all 4 boxes if needed, in that order, to get your rights back.

You were 15 three months ago, how is it that you are 17 now?

RI does not require a "gun license" very few states require such at thing.

Sure you can own one if it is properly imported. I just don't think Russia will be exporting military sniper rifles to the US civilian market.

The "Record" are special order $8000+ rifles that I have no seen actually for sale in the US, but you can always contact the US distributor and ask them.

As one who also plays video games (including BBC1) I can tell you that the weapons are always misrepresented as they ofter are on TV and movies.

If you can't handle a R700 (or any other entry-level bolt action rifle), then you are certainly not ready for McMillan (or an SV-98). "meh it was okay" translates to you didn't know what the F you are doing. $6000+ rifle (that you could not possibly afford) is not going to make you a better shooter.

1) If you live in the United States, you probably don't need a gun license. If you happen to live in a state that requires one to own a bolt-action rifle, move.

2) I don't give a rip if you aren't really into a Remington 700. It's still a better choice than an SV-98, which only comes in 7.62x51mm NATO and 7.62x54mmR, incidentally. Why don't you look at other rifle manufacturers, such as Savage, Winchester, Tikka, Ruger, and Weatherby? They all make excellent rifles that would likely be a great deal less expensive than something that is imported from overseas... And you can get a lot better choices in ammunition.

3) If you only want the SV-98 because you saw it in a video game, you're really not doing yourself justice. Have you ever even held one? It's almost 13 pounds. That's all well and good if you just want to use it for benchrest shooting, but what if you actually want to hunt? Or shoot from a standing position? Try something that weighs significantly less.

4) McMillan rifles are so incredibly expensive that you will probably never own one. Their base model hunting rifle is over $6,000.

If I were you, I would look into something like a Savage MKII with a nice 3-9X scope. Find a 200 yard range, and when you can reliably hit the 10x ring on a reduced distance target, then you can think about moving up to a precision centerfire. You will find that on the range, and through life in general, people are more impressed by your skills than the gear you haul out of your vehicle.

If you just want a bunch of noise and recoil, get a Mosin Nagant M44 or M38 for $250 and have a blast.

Either choice will be fun at the range and won't cost as much as a good used car.

You can get an Accuracy International stock, and a R700 with a threaded barrel (just thrown on your flash hider) and have a gun that looks almost identical to an SV-98, and is superior in every way.

Don't see why not since it's just a Bolt Action rifle but why would ANYONE waste time and money importing one when there are superior rifles already commercially available? The problem as I see it is that the rifle probably cost at most 200-400 dollars to produce and someone would like try to sell it for 2000-3000 dollars.

I don't see any reason why it would be illegal. It might be hard to find one.

I don't know much about McMillans; I just know about their Tac-50.

Edit: Sorry, I didn't pay attention to most of the question.

Calibers: SV-98: 7.62x54mmR

McMillian Tac-50: 50BMG.

Not sure about the cost of the SV. Tac-50: $10,000.

Since it is a bolt action, .308 rifle ,I see not reason for it to be illegal, but , from what I can find, it is not for sale here in the US as yet. You might google the gun and maybe find a seller or price.

Where do you live that you need a gun license? I suggest you move to a free state.
