Not only do you need to ask which of these you want, but you need to research the individual rifle. If you have the money, try to get a Russian AK (either caliber) as they really knew how to build them. Saiga is a Russian company that built semi-auto AK's for civilian use. NORNICO are Chinese AK's and are suprisingly good quailty. Most people in the US though probably end up getting a Romanian WASR-10 which were semi-auto's built for civialian use. These AK-47's are usually the lowest in price and there have been several complaints about them. If you do get one, try to get the WASR-10 63 that was built before 1970. These seem to be the best of the WASR's. From personal experience, I would say that if you get a WASR-10, be sure to use TAPCO magazines as they seem to do the best job of feeding ammo.

Ammo for AK-47's (7.62x39) is plentiful and you can buy massive amounts at places like Cabela's or your local gun store.

Pennsylvania? good thing you're not in New York!

here are the imparitave differences between the two guns. the ak47 has a 7.62x39mm cartridge which is a 30 caliber round. it's relatively slow moving, but you know it works. why else would there have been 60 million guns made?

the ak74 has a 5.45x39mm round, which is closer to a .22 caliber. the round is faster, but dropping a deer is harder.

the ak47 is all around a better gun. i'd get one of those

I even have examples of the two, its a toss up at superb. i could take 6 of one and 0.5 a dozen of the different. 5.40 5 has a flatter trajectory so it makes making hits at prolonged ranges some what much less annoying, 7.62x39 drops like a rock previous 3 hundred yards. the two way no AK would be winning at Camp Perry. I even have heard from first hand money owed nonetheless that 5.40 5 is the suck while utilized in a squad help place. a sturdy chum of my father replaced into in Grozny returned in 'ninety six with a spetsnaz MVD unit (those are ministry of inner affairs troops, form of like a bypass between a countrywide swat team/ our national shield) in accordance to him their RPK74s lacked barrier penetration while used against uncomplicated chechen construction substances. PKMs and captured RPDs have been seen an somewhat well-known merchandise to assist superb those themes.

you can get the two of them in many calibers mostly 762 but it all depends on if you want

a close quarters weapon for defense or if you want the ak for accuracy, because the ak74 is supposed to be a sub machine gun but was made semi auto for civilians and depending on where you live might be considered a handgun

The AK-47 is a 7.62mm cartridge, which puts a lot more power behind the round. the 74 is a 5.45mm round with less stopping power, but a higher rate of fire and improves accuracy during sustained fire. its highly dependent on what application you want it for.

Depends on what you are using it for; six of one and half dozen of the other.
