Question:
Best 9MM for the Money?

I recently came into a large quantity of 9mm ammo, so I am looking for a good quality semi-auto 9mm pistol. I want something inexpensive, durable, reliable, fun to shoot, and with readily available accessories. This would not be for defense or anything just be a plinking and having fun. So basically I am looking for the Ruger 10/22 of 9mm's.

I've heard a lot of good things about the CZ's

A S&W sigma. I hear thier triggers are a bit rough, but reliable. I've seen them less than $400. (Like 350). Their M&P's aren't bad either, but the are a bit more expensive

Glocks, you can get them, used for in the $400-450 range.

Springfield XD's. You can get them for a bit less than Glocks.

Ruger P series, can get them for in the 350 range, and they are built like tanks. (like most rugers).

Beretta 92, owned one, sold one. Not bad, just not cheap, and there are better things out there IMHO.

If you can find a reasonably priced Walther P1 (which is hard to find these days) that's a fun pistol to shoot. It is one of my favorite range toys.

The Beretta PX4 Storm is a good pistol. They're about $500, though.

A Ruger P89 runs at about $350-$400 new I think. They're built like a tank. Probably one of the best values.

Used Glocks can be found at around $400 if you look carefully.

Hi-Point is cheap, but really pretty trashy. I'd definitely try to do better than that.

The Browning High-Power is over priced if you ask me.

The Beretta 92FS is a good value, some people like it, others hate it. Mostly, it depends on the size of your hands.

That pretty well covers it. A quality 9mm like the P89, 92FS, or PX4 is not that much more expensive than a piece of junk like a Hi-Point if you look at the big picture. The former will last for generations, the latter will last until next Christmas.

If you're looking for the 10/22 of 9mm's (when it comes to accesories, customizing) then you may want to consider a Glock or a Browning High Power-style pistol as previously suggested.

If you're looking for a gun that fits most of the criteria you listed, I'd suggest checking out the Sig Sauer P6. It's a European police issue version of the P225- bascially the same gun with a few minor changes including a special hammer meant to deform if dropped to prevent accidental discharge.

Steel frame, single stack 8 shot magazine, easy and fun to shoot. I paid $300 for mine and it included a case and 2 factory mags. I picked up a few aftermarket (Pro Mag) clips for about $20/ea but they're serious junk compared to the factory offerings. Some people have complained about their ability to feed JHP cartridges but I've had no problem shooting both 115 grain WWB FMJ rounds and Remington Golden Sabre JHP in 147 grain.

Prices have gone up a little but I've heard of P6s in great condition still going for under $350. If you don't need 15 rounds (which you wouldn't in a plinking situation), you won't even care that it carries half of the ammo of your average wonder nine. They're a great chance to own a quality Sig firearm for a third of what your average Sig goes for.

Ruger P95 is one of the best values in 9mm pistols. It's sells brand new for around $300.

You can find cheaper guns, like the Hi-Point C9. They can be pretty hit or miss with reliability though. I'd rather pay a bit more for something like the Ruger P95, which is very reliable and is a great gun.

If you want a plinker/target shooter, a 1911 gets my vote. The plastics fantastics that almost every one else has put forward are great "working guns." They are not as great for target shooting, in my opinion.

A Kimber 1911 in 9mm.

A Taurus PT 1911 in 9mm.

Both of these come in a 5'' barrel, and the Kimber also comes in a 4'' barrel.

The 5" is better for target work.

The 1911 is more easily customized than just about anything, holsters are easy to find, and they typically have a good to great trigger action.

I also like steel and wood (1911) much better than steel and plastic (Glock, XD, Sigma and M&P.)

I would call the Taurus inexpensive, you may or may not.

the least expensive good 9mm handgun out there IMHO is the Ruger P95. The thing is a brick, but it is solid.

Many people are fans of Glock, for good reason. They are a bit more but they are very solid. Plus, there is a strong used market for one, so consider getting a used one. Glocks just seem to keep on working and working. I personally don't care for them but a lot of people do.

I think the best 9mm handgun out there for the value is the CZ-75B It is SIG quality for Glock prices.

If you are looking for the "Ruger 10/22 of 9mm's", you should consider the Ruger SR9. A buddy of mine has one and just loves it. I've tried it for a couple boxes and it proved to be a nice handling, accurate gun. Ruger does have a well deserved reputation for making the kind of gun you want.

As much as I'm going to hate myself in the morning for saying this, you might want to look at High Point firearms. These are the no frills pistol, they have a lifetime guarantee, they go bang every time you pull the trigger. They are Ugly, they are cheaply made, they have the ergonomics of salt treated 2x4, they use low quality steel in their construction, they are accurate, and somewhat reliable. If you promise to NEVER use it for defense, and only use it for fun and plinking, then get one, do NOT under any circumstance trust your life with it. It is NOT reliable enough for a self defense pistol.

Be honest and say a Glock 19 like I own. It will feed anything, take it to hell and back and it will work for ya.

Oh if you want a cheap 9mm go buy a hi-point 9mm for like $150.

I have a Beretta PX4 Storm. The Storm has a rail under the barrel to mount your toys on. I haven't fired it much but it has never jammed or mis-fired. I paid $425 for a new one from a hobby gun shop. Holds 18 shots and came with 3 mags and two sets of grips.

I love my Springfield XDM 9mm. 19 round magazines, match grade barrel, excellent fit and feel (for me. You need to try a gun before you buy it.) Holster, magazine loader, magazine holster, lock, bore brush and hard case all included. Has a rail for accessories, too. It's very cool to fire 20 pistol rounds without reloading!

1. CZ 75b: Haggle Price $470-$500

What a shooter. Nice trigger. Never a jam! Over 10,000 rounds and still going strong. The CZ 75b gets better the more you shoot it. After the first 1,000 rounds, it performs like a tuned competition pistol. The accuracy is amazing. Even die hard revolver guys shoot good with this gun. It points like a M1911 and handles like a Hi-Power. If you spend some time shooting the 75b, you will fall in love with it too. I don't think you can do better for under $900. Ditto for the CZ 85b. Could CZ better the 75b platform? Yes; see the awesome CZ SP-01.

2. FN Herstal FNP-9: Haggle Price $460-$490

Made in USA! The finish and quality of the FN FNP-9 is very good. If you are a Sig pistol fan, you will like this gun. The FNP-9 handles like a P229, only lighter weight. Out to 15 yards, the FNP-9 is very accurate. It has one of the best triggers you will find on a carry pistol. A nice feature for those with small or large hands is you can swap out backstraps. Good gun for your lady. I like the standard DA/SA with no goofy trigger saftey. Feeds any 9mm ammo great, including the greasy Russian stuff. The FNP-9 is one of the best holster guns you can get. Three 16 round mags included! Cops should love this gun. It's a keeper! Same for the Browning Pro.

3. Baby Eagle 9915R: Haggle Price $490-$520

The MRI Baby Eagle is all steel with a 4.52" barrel. Handles just like the CZ 75, but more solid. Very good shooter with a strong heavy feel to it. About 500 rounds for break-in. I love shooting this baby. The good trigger and solid feel makes this the ultimate double-tap pistol. It is as close to the perfect shooter as you can get. The MRI Baby Eagle is a good choice for combat competition. I would have ranked it above the CZ if the exterior finish was better. Overall quality is great. The Baby Eagle is built to last a lifetime. The Isralies sure know how to make fine firearms. Also known as the Jericho 941.

4. Beretta 92FS (M9): Haggle Price $520-$550

Great performance on the range. This is a man's pistol. A true warrior that replaced the 45 ACP 1911 service pistol. The Beretta M9-A1 (or 92FS) is the most tested pistol since the M1911-A1. Used by the U.S. Military and thousands of poilce officers. Beretta 92 pistols with over 75,000 rounds have been reported. This solid designed pistol is what replaced so many police revolvers. Nothing shoots better than a well used Beretta 92FS. Allow about 300 rounds for break-in. Good long range pistol. I can hit the 50 yard gong over and over again. Easy to find magazines and holsters for this popular gun. The Italian made ones are tight! Beretta is going to phase out the 92FS. Get one now!
