Hello,

Im considering a weatherby vanguard, and a savage 111, both with the scope combo. Any comments on which you would choose? How do these compare? I plan on getting them in either .308 or .30-06. I know its a broad question, but any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks

I've owned 30-06 rifles since I was 14 (long time) and it is still my favorite cartridge to shoot and load for. The 308 is like 30-06 Lite, almost there, not quite. you really can't go wrong with either caliber though.

I personally prefer the Vanguard over the Savage; I like the more traditional feel of the bolt action, the Vanguard feels smoother to me and Howa actions are just as solid and dependable as any. But, same as with caliber, you can't go wrong either way. Both are going to be equally accurate once you find the right load for it and both will provide years of enjoyment.

You might hear 308 is more accurate--it "might be" statistically, but again, finding the right load makes the difference. Folks who reload know that.

My dad has a savage 30-06 and I have a weatherby vanguard sub-moa in .270 wsm, both are excellent guns, however the bolt release on the savage is extremely difficult to operate, necessitating three or four hands, however the trigger on the savage is much better, I have replaced my trigger with a timney. We have identical scopes, my rifle is more accurate, however it has cost $350 more than my dad's savage after trigger, so if cost is not an issue I would go for the vanguard and get a good trigger, however the savage is an excellent rifle and I learned to shoot on one, now as to cartridge selection, I haven't used a rifle in 308, but have not been let down by the 30-06, and is what i would recommend to anyone looking to start shooting rifles

The Vanguard is made by Howa to Weatherby specs. The Savage will come with a 3 X 9 simmons scope on it. Go for the Savage.

They are actually very similar for the most part, I own a Savage 111 in .223 but I really do like the Vanguard a lot, you really can not go wrong with either gun but personally I like the Savage more and that is only because of the Accutrigger it is just so versatile not to mention they are a very accurate rifle. However so is the Vanguard.

They are both good rifles so In suggest you shoulder and work the action on each to see which one feels 'right' to you.

Also, I'm no fan of these combo packages with usually cheap scopes. Get the rifle and scope separately.

* Yes invest in the Savage in 30-06 and the Scopes are A-OK on them.*
