Question:
Smith & Wesson M&P Ar-15 opinions?

i have the option for a *smokin* deal on a used basic M4 style which has an inexpensive optic mounted. The gun is in 90% condition with 2 mags and carry handle (detached due to scope). Yes, i am aware of the modular nature of the ar-15, and that a lot are Ford vs. Chevy opinions, but if you own or have shot this gun, what do you think in comparision to other ar-15's? I believe the model is 811000, chambered in 5.56.

I have one.

It's not much difference than the rest of the AR platform rifles - but - I must ask........what color and type/style is the imprinting on the side? See - if it has solid white printing where it says MP-5 on the right side then it is a factory made rifle. If it has subdued writting, or the letters are a thin outline with a base/black inside - it is a lower that was sold as a stripped lower - and is a gun made on someone's kitchen table. This will not be a rifle that appreciates in value - could infact be made by somone with no clue.

S&W M&P?

They are nice rifles. Everyone knows that I'm not an AR "snob" and think that "most" people would be well served by any of them, but S&W's are truly a step up from Bushmaster and Rock River Arms.

So if you have a hot deal in the works- pull the trigger on it. You'll be satisfied.

If it falls through, I do have a suggestion...This will most likely be my next AR:

A CMMG M4gery upper with 14.7" barrel and "permanent" A2 flash hider. This is as short as you can get without getting cozy with the BATFE. It's a 1 in 7 barrel, 4150 steel, chrome lined, "well done" M4 feed ramps, parkerizing under the front sight base, an "F" marked front sight base, MPI, and flattop. Dealers generally price these between $485. and $550.

Lower? Well just about any will work, but CMMG lowers with M4 butt are about $250.- most dealers. Best to buy the upper and lower separately here, big money savings. CMMG offers -many- options beyond what I've mentioned, but to get any additional options you'd be best served by ordering direct from CMMG. (Pricier.)

One heck of a rifle for $800. Rear sight not included. Quality "far beyond" price, and the uppers are a step up from S&W. The next worthwhile step up from CMMG would be a Daniel Defense DD-XV M4gery at $1200. This rifle is also a deal for what you get.

Sorry for the digression, but I'm sure it's at least interesting reading?

I bought one with a flat top, fold up rear battle sight, 4 way Picatinny rail with rail covers, collapsible stock, gently used, original hard case and paperwork. Paid 975.00 for it and I'm happy. I hung a Bushnell Holosite on it, and a CAA vertical foregrip with the flip up feature. It came with 1 mag, but I've got 2 other AR platform guns and tons of magazines, so that's not an issue. It shoots as well as any other I've shot out to 100 yards, and quite frankly, even if the SHTF, you won't be taking shots much past 100 yards anyway. The only thing I want is a single point sling, and I'm still looking for something that grabs my attention. Next gun show, hopefully, will take care of that problem.

1. It's a magazine. 2. If you live in restricted state (most democratic states)you can't buy a bigger magazine for it. If you don't live in restricted state (all republican states) you can get a regular mag release for it and you can buy a 30 round magazine for it. Seeing as you call it a clip and don't know about the gun you bought I would take it to a gunsmith and have him install the new mag release. Please specify which state you live in and detail your question a bit more and I'll edit my answer accordingly. Edit: Ok then yea, there's no restrictions on mags in WV. You can't release the mag with only your finger can you? That's because it has a bullet button. Take it to a gunsmith and have him install a regular mag release. Should cost around $30-$50. Any AR-15/M16 mag (in your caliber) will work.

I haven't used one personally. But my counties sheriff's office does. I have a friend that's a deputy and a Gulf War veteran. He says he likes it better than his Rock River. I find this some what hard to believe but he may own one of the stripped down models. It's also personal preference. I believe he said he could shoot tighter groups with the S&W.

I know you've been in the market for a while now. Best advice I can give you is to look it over with a fine tooth comb for any flaws. Check everything for signs of wear and excessive abuse. You know what to look for.

Ask to take it to a range and test fire it. Any reputable seller will have no problems with doing that.

They look good in the magazines and I don't recall hearing anything bad about them. If in doubt get ahold of Butch if he doesn't answer. That guy knows a lot and helped me out with my AR purchase. Everything down to the smallest detail he told me about my SR-556 was true.

From my personal experience i would get the Sig Sauer 556. It is similar to the m4/ar15 in almost every way except for the charging handles is located on the rear center on the m4/ar15 and on the right side on the Sig 556. it has a full set of rails, you can you Sig style stocks, or m4 stocks. I have used many ar15, m4's a few mp15's and none compare to the comfort of the Sig Sauer 556.

I haven't had the chance to play with one very much. I did get to put about 30 rounds through one a few months ago and it worked great. It felt just like my Colt and the grouping was great at 100yards after about my 5th round. Just like any new gun, you have to get used to it first to be able to really see how it does. Everything locked up fine. I was using an older magazine and it fed with no problem. I would definitely buy one if I got a good deal on it. I know that's not much but hope it helps.

S&W makes some awesome AR-15s. You get a lot of features for the price you pay and the overall quality is excellent. Many PDs in my area have started switching from Bushmaster and RRA rifles to S&W and as far as I know they're really liking them.

YES! Get it! I've got one, and I love it. It does great for close quarters situations IE 50-200 yards. Even beyond that you'll still be hittin things easily. BUt over all I love it. I've shot the M&P side by side with a STAG, I loved the M&P so much better.
