so i am looking at tree stands and really like the idea of the climing stands that you climb up with and back down with... it will be mainly used in pine trees so there are dead branches but i figure if i go pick out a few trees i want to hunt in about this time of year i can go and cut off dead limbs then in the hunt it will me nice and read for me to climb...what do ya'll think? go for it or just wait till a good portable ground blind comes out?

I think they are a pain and not too secure....I would rather have a ladder stand or a wood stand I built with a platform up top. Its your choice......

I've used climbing stands for many years now. I have on occasion been up pine trees also. I can tell you I like the climbers better than the ladder stands or ground blinds. It's a good choice.

Having said that I will warn you though ..the climber in a pine tree makes alot ..amd I mean a lot of noise going up and coming down. The bark is very scaly and tends to crack loudly. You can still do it but just wanted to give you a heads up.

You've got the right idea. I've used every stand known to mankind in my lifetime and I've settled on the two piece climber as the best system on the market. All have their good points but the climber is extremely portable and offers the greater vision to see down into the brush and in the surrounding woods due to your ability to climb higher if necessary. You can also scout new locations with the stand on your back, and when you come across something red hot, you just pick out your tree and climb it. It is the highest contributing factor to being a successful bow hunter that you can get. I highly recommend the Summit Viper or one of the climbers from API outdoors. Either would be great for gun hunting, but I have both and for bow hunting I favor the Summit Viper. I have to stand up to shoot with the API, but can shoot sitting down with the Summit. The less movement you make when bow hunting the better chance of not spooking the deer when they may be 10 steps from your tree. Good luck on your hunting season!

I agree with Nitro they are not all that secure.

I have a stand at the moment hanging in a pine. Mine is a chain on stand with a home made ladder built out of treated lumber. I got rid of all most of my climbers. They can get you killed. The Tree Lounge is the best stand I have ever seen as far as holding on to a tree. http://www.treelounge.com/

I also have a few ladder stands they are safer but are not as easily hid and harder to move around. They help a feller of my size get up and down a tree. (I'm 6'3" 250 lbs.)

When hunting in a tree stand use the Hunter Safety System and go back home to your family. http://www.huntersafetysystem.com/

I am a dork so climbing up things is not a good idea for me with a firearm. So I prefer ground blinds they are also quicker to move when your plans need to change and you never need a tree. I have the primos

* Go with the Climbable tree stand.* It has the greatest percentage of being successful when Hunting Big Game.*~~

Those free standing tripods are pretty cool, not as high but secure. Lets you see under the canopy as well, which can be nice in a dense forested area.
