I was just wondering how loud a 20 gauge shotgun is. If it matters, the model is a Remington 870.

It's as loud as a gunshot.
You should wear earplugs if that's why you're asking.

very loud. even outside in an open area your ears will be temporarily overwhelmed by the noise.
you can only get quiet shells if you modify them to only shoot the wad and use only the primer and a tiny amount of powder. It'll make it useless for hunting or plinking, but good enough for home defense. Reverse the wad when you re-insert it. or stick it int there normally and pile on some airsoft BBs, then use some masking tape to hold them in. If you shot someone with this at like 15 feet, he'll fall down in pain. Aim for the stomach or face.

Its loud enough to be heard from round 1 mile in an open space. You should wear ear protection if your planning on shooting many shells. If you wanna kill someone and do it silenlty try ducktapping some pillows in frond of the muzzle and shooting big game shells.Usually boars shells will do.
The pillows ofcurse will make the projectyle loose its original track but for distances like 3-4 meters you should have no problems getting a head shot.

It has a moderate shotgun blast compared to a 16 or 12 gauge shotgun.*

about as loud as a 16 guage, which is about as loud as a 12. when using any firearm hearing protection should be used. most folk my age and older weren't told this when we first started shooting, now we gert to hear ringing in our ears 24/7, that is the ones of us that can hear at all!

If you've ever shot a 12 gauge its more louder than a 20.
They're not too loud tho, u should provide more information like compared to what or if your wanting the decibel levels or what not

I would suggest hearing protection, its not so loud it will permanently deafen you but your ears will be ringing for about an hour and it will be difficult to hear things.
