Recoil (what most people call 'kick') is produced when firing a gun. Remember the physics phrase 'for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction'?
What produces percieved recoil in shooting a shotgun is the powder amount and the load or shot amount. Using shells that have less load (less shot) will have a much less recoil.
Look at the box of shells..the powder will be in dram equivelant and shot will be in ounces. Pick the load with the least amount of ounces (1oz in 12ga and 7/8oz in 20ga).
Enroll in a hunter education class, all this will be explained and you'll enjoy your shooting experience a lot more.

It really depends on the gun; most just hurt your sholder a little bit (if you do not hold it tight enough against you), but one of the bigger ones (like the 12 gage) can actually push you back a little bit.
It may be a little bit different for you: i'm just a girl!

It depends on your size, strength and the gauge of the shotgun (12 ga., etc). Most modern shotguns have a built in rubber recoil pad that takes up alot of the shock. Lean into it and you will be fine, just be prepared for a kick.

it depends, a 20 gauge is not as powerful and wont have that much kick, a 12 gauge however is much more powerful. Just remember to keep the butt of the gun firm against your shoulder. THink of it as if u were punching someone, if your fist was already on your shoulder, the force could never be that strong, but if your were 2 inches away, that S.O.B. would sting.

A shotgun can do both depending on what position you fire it from. If you fire it from the prone position (on your belly) it will hurt your shoulder but not push you back because the entire weight of your body is behind the gun. If you fire it from the standing position then the gun will push you back but your shoulder will not absorb the impact.

Depends on the shotgun and how big your shoulder is, for adults it would probably just feel like someone slapping you on your shoulder, but if you are a kid or a very petite woman it might knock them to the ground.

There will almost always be recoil that will push against you and yes, it can hurt your shoulder - depends on how big the shotgun is and how you are holding it.

yes it pushes you back. and hurt all depends on your tolerance of pain. but dont be a pussy, just suck it up and have fun. if you have never shot before and if you arent that big, you might have some bruises in a few days, but those are just battle scars...

You need to hold the butt of the gun as close to your shoulder as you can get it. That way it will just push your shoulder back. If you do not hold it tight or hold it away from your shoulder it will kick you pretty hard.

it depends if you're a wuss or not.

It does both depending on how experienced you are with the weapon and how powerful it is.

if you handled the gun the wrong way, it would hurt. and if you're lumpy, it'll push you back.
