* The 30-06 because it is the most Popular and Used Big Game caliber by Hunters around the world.* The Vast Majority of Big and Small Game is killed within 100 yards or less.* For Hunting Elk use the 180 or 220 grain bullet.* Buy the Remington or Savage bolt action Brand Rifle in 30-06 caliber.

Best all around deer cartridge out there a lot will agree on this with me is the .30-06. It has a 105+ year service date and has seen a lot of results for killing deer. Its the most common cartridge for hunting for your money. Ammo for soft point will run between $17.99-$49.99 on 150 grain, 168 grain (silver tip Federal) and 180 grain. I think 220 grain is the same price as the 150 and 180 grain.

In my .308 i use 150 grain Federal Power-shok (light blue box) and 180 grain of the same stuff. My dad uses .30-06 Remington core-lokt 150 grain bullets.

For a gun in your price range Winchester model 70 with a 3-9x40 or 4-12x40 or 42mm Nikon Prostaff or Bushnell Trophy XLT.

Remington 700 with same scope.

May i also recommend a bi-pod 6-9" for bench and prone shooting? I bought mine for $49.99. Its a Rock Mountain 6-9 adjustable. I think this is just as good if not better than a Harris bi-pod of the same time but for $50 cheaper.

if you want a rifle, i'd say an m1 garand. you might not think they are "the bees knees" right now, but it's a gun that's just going to increase in value and you'll enjoy it for years down the road. in all honesty, i'd go after a nice 1911 100th anniversary pistol. a nice kimber might not draw a crowd at the range, but it will make everyone that shoots it jealous. also, you won't see another 1911 centennial until, well 2111. having suggested that, i realize that you are not 21 yet. but, in my state, you are allowed to own a handgun at 18, you just can't buy it yourself. so, let's say, someone "gives it to you as a gift"...that's legal. i did that for my girlfriend when she was under 21. if you decide on the 1911, just check the law in your state.

Again with the bad a$$ gun nonsense!

But, I'll indulge you for a moment. How about a Remington 700 chambered in .375 Hawk/Scovill? You'd have to handload to hit your ammo price target, but you'd have something others would ooooh and aaaaah over.

I have a CMP special M1 Garand in 30-06 that almost literally make peoples jaws drop because of how nice it looks. it has a beautiful walnut stock. every thing on it other than the new stock is original 1943.

This baby here http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/finder/

still leaves you $500-$700 depending on new/used or what the price at the gun store is.

throw this on http://www.shopbushnell.com/detail/BSN+733126E and you will have a pretty good lookin gun....should even have enough left over for a bipod

Get a SOCOM M-14. That will get the job done and they are pretty impressive, too.

Given your writing skills, I'm not sure I'd recommend much more than a cap gun.

I don't know what rifle you should get but I do know where you should get it from.
