Picked up a used mini14 yesterday. Got out of the store with it, 30rd clip, and 80 rounds for just a little over $400. I think I got a good deal, buddy says I got screwed. Have not put it on paper yet and do not expect it to be real great, did do some plinking with it and like it so far. (Unlike most on here I can not shoot 20 shots in the same hole off hand, open sights, with surplus ammo, so no reason to expect the gun to :) )

Depends ---- What serial # Ruger Mini 14? The newer 580 series or the older 180 series... Check the first 3 numbers in the serial #........ The newer Mini 14's (580 series) are more accurate.... Even if its an earlier # then I wouldnt sweat it..... These rifles are EXPENSIVE!!! A new Ranch Rifle Mini 14 is now $600 in my area and the stainless ones sell for over $700...... If yours is in excellent shape then you got it for a decent price..... The last time I was on gunbroker.com I didnt see any Ruger Mini sell for less then $500...... Yes these minis are not super accurate rifles but I should point out that most people that rag on these rifles dont know what they are talking about...... The Mini 14 wont shoot a 1 inch group, So What!! - With a $125 scope I can get 2 1/2 inch groups all day at 100 yards... Ohh 2 1/2 groups some armchair gun gurus say isnt good? Baloney! Every coyote that ever got in my sights up to 150 yards got dead real fast... So it wont do a 1 inch grup? Big deal! It will still hit any coyote, bobcat or any other medium size critter with no problem.... The best accuracy I get with the Mini 14 is with regular cheap bulk brass ammo. This rifle will digest Wolf steel ammo ok but that ammo does not give consistent accuracy -- but cheap bulk brass FMJ works just fine!! ----- Some people are AR15 people and some people are Ruger Mini 14 people... I own the Target Mini 14, 2 Mini 14 Ranch Rifles and 2 Ruger Mini 30 ranch Rifles..... I personaly feel these are the finest most well built carbines you can get for the money... Some AR15 folks will tell you there rifles are more accurate out of the box -- thats true -- but in my humble opinion the Mini is more reliable and well built than any AR15.....

If the rifle is in excellent shape then you got a good deal.

5.56mm ammo is going for around .40c a round, so that's "around" $32 worth of ammo.

What would throw your deal into the real of great deal would be if that 30rd magazine is a Ruger factory Mag. They go for around $100

The Ruger Mini 14 is a nice rifle >Mine must be defective also, because that's what I get 2 - 3 inch(5 shot) groups. And no that's not iron sights, I have a Weaver K-4 on the one I shoot<

I have to confess that I do prefer the Colt AR-15(SP-1), but both are really nice rifles.

You can check and see what one in like condition to yours has sold for recently on

http://www.gunbroker.com >use the "going-going-gone" feature to search what they have sold for in the past 90 days

http://www.gunsamerica.com

would be another place to check and see if you could find one in similar condition to yours.

I figure, if I'm happy with a deal and the guy I bought if from is happy, then it was a good deal.

A new one here in NC at the local Wal-Mart is over $600 dollars with a low capacity clip.

If someone offered me one for $400 with your clip and ammo, I would be making tracks to the bank. Unless the rifle is beat to sh*it, you got a really good deal. Enjoy.

The mini-14 replace into reliable adequate for the A-group, so this is reliable adequate for me! heavily nonetheless, i like my mini. suits me nicely, this is extreme-high quality and trim and undemanding to hold, fee me a 0.33 of what an AR could have fee on the time (back interior the previous due 90s), and this is approximately as good as an AK. not purely like the AR, the Mini would not fill the receiver with powder residue. regrettably its accuracy lies someplace between the AK and the AR, closer to the AK. each and every little thing I learn the present version shows that they are lots extra precise, yet nevertheless not truly as precise as an AR. And while you're into the tacticool crap (lasers, cheese graters, holo attractions with co-witnessed BUIS, bayonet lugs, flash suppressors, vertical foregrips, twin drum magazines, flash easy, lug wrench, air conditioner, rapid-charger with intercooler, bathroom paper dispenser, etc.) then the Mini-14 isn't for you. yet, while you're finding for a reliable walking-around gun to apply the place your photographs would be interior 2 hundred yards, a extreme-high quality, easy, short Mini-14 with a ten-around magazine is hard to beat.
