Am investigating the fur industry. Many videos online (& documentary "The Witness") advise trapping is still done & do not indicate it is illegal. My boyfriend who has a hunting license says all trapping is now illegal. Should I contact Dept. of Wildlife, Fish & Game?

Yes its still legal in many places including Canada and Alaska.

I know the people against trapping play the heart strings of people to support them and their cause. But they simply don’t understand how nature works.

Please think about this; predators eat animals that’s what they do. Ok what happens if there are too many predators in a given area? Answer; they over use that food supply until they are forced to find another area or they starve to death. I could take you to areas here in Alaska where this has happened. You won’t see a deer or any small animals or ground birds such as grouse. You walk through the woods and its void of animals other than small birds passing through. And area like that can take decades to recover. Then there is a population boom because the predators are gone, no wolves, coyotes, no marten nothing. So the rabbits and other small game animals flourish. This draws in predators who then have a population explosion because of all the prey available and it all starts over again. This is the way of nature; death from a predator or starvation.

Now enter the trapper. He goes into an area and finds very few predators. He passes on that area because its not worth his time and money. So the predators there are let alone. He finds another area chuck full of predators and traps some. This helps the predators left there with less competition and helps the prey from being wiped out. It keeps a balance. And to be sure that balance is kept wildlife biologists keep tabs on population densities and recommend to Fish & Game or the D.N.R how many animals of what kind can be trapped there.

Bottom line if trapping was banned it will cause the starvation of predators and a huge loss of their prey. In some areas this means home owners will have starving predators come to their property and kill their pets and livestock.

I knew a woman who was against trapping wolves here in Alaska she fought hard to ban trapping. In just 2 years she moved out. The reason? Wolves killed her young horses and lamas, coyotes killed all her ducks and range chickens and her cats and small dogs. She lost everything she loved from hungry predators.

I hope this helps you understand how controlled trapping is beneficial to humans and nature.

It all depends on the state you live in, I live in missouri and I'm pretty sure trapping is still legal, but you need a special permit and only during certain times of the year. you shoiuld check your local Dept. of Wildlife, Fish & Gamefor specifics, though, as your boyfriend could just be making an honest mistake.

Still legal, but real fur coats are soooo politically incorrect that demand is down, which runs down the price of the pelts, which makes it unprofitable to trap, which makes for more furbearers in the wild, which makes for more predatory animals (eastern coyote has made a comeback that is unreal). Thank PETA the next time you hear that someone's poodle was turned into coyote dung, or a little kid gets bitten by a coyote.

Got tired of waiting for him to buy that fur coat??

Like the first poster said it does depend on the State you live in. Trapping is still legal in many states, however, it is controlled. You do need a license or permit and what animal you trap may be regulated as well.

Here is a link to a somewhat lengthy document; is is a summary of trapping regs. in the U.S. Everything you need to know is in this booklet.

Go get that fur coat. . .

I live in Alaska where trapping is alive and well.

You can visit Funke Trap Tags and Supplies online - just google them - and see what traps are legal.

FYI. In areas where trapping has been made illegal - they normally have an outbreak of rabbies shortly after. Then the state has to step in, hire professional trappers, and pay them (plus benefits + retirement, bonuses) to do the job they used to make money off of on trapping licenses. Makes no sense to me - seems to make perfect sense to Democrates, liberals and anti-trappers.

Remembering an incident happened doesn't make you guilty of the incident. At the least, it makes you a witness. The person interrogating you shouldn't have done so over the phone. I would go into the office and discuss this with your supervisor/boss.

With the purchase of a trapping tag it is legal in my state. But I don't know anyone that still does it other than for nuisance animals (skunks, raccoons, nutria, opossums).

Its not illegal in Ohio. However I know its illegal in Massachusetts. My suggestion is you contact your state's game management agency and ask them.
